The Story of BCGR

A Community’s Journey Toward Hope and Empowerment

The Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester (BCGR) is more than just a nonprofit. It is a living, breathing testimony to resilience, unity, and the enduring human spirit. It began with a shared dream—held by a few determined individuals— who, like thousands of their fellow Bhutanese, had journeyed from refugee camps in Nepal to a new and unfamiliar home in Rochester, New York.

These founders were not strangers to struggle. As newly resettled Bhutanese Americans, they witnessed firsthand the steep challenges that came with starting over: the challenges of navigating a new system, the language barriers, the silence of isolation, and the overwhelming shift in culture. Yet, amid the uncertainty, they saw something powerful—their community’s strength. And from that realization, BCGR was born.

The Moment That Sparked a Movement

On June 7th, 2014, what started as a few heartfelt conversations around dinner tables became a formal reality. The Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester was officially founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It wasn’t simply an administrative milestone—it was the turning point when a group of like-minded individuals took the future into their own hands. They knew their community needed more than just shelter and food—it needed support, advocacy, and a voice.

Serving with Purpose

Today, BCGR works tirelessly for the advancement of the Bhutanese American community in the Greater Rochester area. With a heart rooted in service, our activities are grounded in charity, education, empowerment, and preserving and promoting unique culture and festivals. We connect individuals with vital community and public resources. We advocate for those who struggle to speak up. And most importantly, we equip our members with knowledge and tools to not just survive—but to thrive.

Our programs are designed to respond to real needs: language classes to bridge communication gaps, Nepali dance classes for youth for cultural preservation and to inspire new generations, and support services that ensure no one feels left behind.

Empathy at the Heart of All We Do

At BCGR, we lead with empathy—because we’ve lived the very struggles we aim to solve. Each member, volunteer, and leader bring a lived understanding of displacement, of starting anew, and of the courage it takes to rebuild. We believe that when we lift one, we lift all.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to grow, our mission remains steadfast and it reflects to educate, empower, and elevate our community members so they may become proud and contributing members of society at large. The journey is ongoing, but with every step, we move closer to a stronger, more connected future—for our families, our neighbors, and our children.

This is our story. This is BCGR.
